The information provided relates to the accommodation of young adults in the urban location of Walton, commencing in 1970 and running to 2014. Overall, it can be clearly seen that major changes took place, particularly in the numbers living with parents and partners.
At the beginning of the forty-four year period being discussed, just over a third of adults in their early to mid-twenties lived with friends. A slightly smaller number shared a house with their family and a quarter of this age-group lived with a girlfriend, boyfriend or spouse. Fewer than one in ten individuals were either homeless or living on their own.
By the end of the period, there had been quite significant changes in the data. The percentage of young adults living with their mothers and fathers had risen. This was the most common category in 2014, accounting for more than a third of the whole group. The number of younger adults sharing a house with friends had declined steadily over the period in question. There had been a considerable increase in the number living alone; the figure had peaked at around a quarter of all young adults in 2009, before falling slightly by 2014. The proportion of young individuals residing with a partner had fallen sharply by 2014. Finally, the proportion of homeless youngsters had remained relatively constant.
